Southern Education Foundation Leadership Initiative & Research Fellowship
SOUTHERN EDUCATION FOUNDATION LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE & RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
Unique Leadership Development Opportunities for Highly Motivated and Talented Students: (1) The Southern Education Foundation's 2008 Education Leadership Initiative and (2) Southern Education Foundation Program & Research Fellowship
~In 2004, the Southern Education Foundation (SEF) initiated a unique program of outreach to young people to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of the United States Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education, with deeds, not just words. The aim was simple: expose a new generation of highly motivated and gifted college upperclassmen and graduate students to the importance of improving education for all, especially low-income people who need help the most.
~ By placing students to serve as interns in leading Southern foundations and non-profit organizations concerned with fairness and improvements in education policy and practice, SEF sought to create new leaders to help the South continue its progress in improving education opportunity. Since 2004, seventy-nine students from leading Southern colleges and universities have participated in the program.
~ The selection process for interns is competitive. SEF's website, www.southerneducation.org and the attachments hereto provide additional information about the internship.
~ Diversity is important to SEF so we hope that you will act on this request for assistance by sharing it broadly and inclusively with qualified students. Interns:
• ~~~~~~~~~ Participate in an in-depth orientation program at the inception of the program that exposes them to outstanding speakers and information about education policy and practices;
• ~~~~~~~~~ Work with cutting edge non-profit, corporate and foundation leaders;~
• ~~~~~~~~~ Develop an independent project about what they have learned;~ and
• ~~~~~~~~~ Present what they have learned at a special debriefing at the end of the internship. The program provides a generous stipend of $3,000 for undergraduates and $3,500 for graduate students.
~ In addition, this year we are able to offer a full-year fellowship to an outstanding young scholar for service and leadership development with the Southern Education Foundation in Atlanta, GA .
~ The Program & Research Fellow will be directly involved in programmatic work relating to various foundation initiatives including the Southern Education Leadership Initiative, the Center to Serve Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the Latino & Black Education Initiative as well as ongoing education policy research.
~ The fellow will have the opportunity to be exposed to an array of areas such as the independent/non-profit sector, leadership development, program development and implementation, and fundraising—thus enhancing their skills and knowledge of future career possibilities.
~ Additional information about the position is attached.
~We know that you are busy and time is short, but we are hopeful that you will take a few minutes to reach out to students who ought to be involved in programs such as these because of their interests in excellence in education, community service and engagement, public policy, and philanthropy and fairness in opportunity allocation.
~ We hope that you will take time from your busy schedule to encourage your best and brightest students to apply to participate in these great opportunities.
~ Thank you in advance for your help as we seek to lift up the next generation of leaders. Lauren Veasey Program Officer Southern Education Foundation 135 Auburn Avenue NE, Second Floor Atlanta, Georgia 30303 (404) 523-0001, ext.109 lveasey@southerneducation.org www.southerneducation.org
