Purpose of Position:

As a unit of Multicultural Programs and Services (MPS), African American Student Affairs (AASA) is one of four student centers dedicated to the success and retention of historically underrepresented students at the University of Arizona. MPS and Undergraduate Initiatives are departments within the Multicultural Affairs and Student Success (MASS) area, and are a part of the Division of Student Affairs.

The mission of African American Student Affairs (AASA) is to facilitate a support system that helps students achieve academic excellence while enriching African American cultural experiences at the University of Arizona.

The AASA student center provides a supportive environment for students to pursue their academic, personal and professional development and interests. The Center is located within the Martin Luther King, Jr. Building and includes access to a computer lab, social, study and meeting areas, tutoring services, and club/organization information.

The Coordinator, Retention Programs & Services is primarily responsible for the overall implementation, operation and assessment of AASA's retention programs and academic intervention activities in accordance with the unit's mission and goals. The Coordinator will assume primary leadership of the 360 Scholarsº Experience Program, a program designed to address the academic and personal support needs of first- and second-year students. The Coordinator provides leadership and coordination of career, graduate school, internships, and leadership development activities and is responsible for developing and implementing outreach and support strategies targeting transfer students. The Coordinator will assist in the development of comprehensive intervention/retention strategies, programs and services that address students' needs from their first year through graduation.

This Coordinator, Retention Programs & Services works collaboratively with the Director of African American Student Affairs, MASS staff, and other key University departments and services (i.e., University College, Disability Resource Center) to meet the academic support needs of African American students.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provides direct service to students through the development, implementation, coordination, and assessment of programs, resources, and services.
• Establishes a supportive environment that encourages participation, dissemination of information, networking, coalition building, mentoring, academic achievement, and community service.
• Provides leadership in the annual development, planning, coordination, scheduling and implementation of the overall unit’s program dates and activities, ensuring that timelines and relevant tasks are accomplished.
• Teaches a section of “Making the Most of the University Experience: Connections,” a class that focuses on transition issues, learning strategies, diverse learning communities and personal development.
• Serves as a member of MASS’s retention team.
• Plans, directs, and manages an operations budget. Assists Director in identifying alternative sources of funds to enhance and expand programs, resources, and services.
• Develops, implements, and evaluates methods to identify and outreach to target populations, including collaboration with University departments (i.e., Early Academic Outreach, Admissions).
• Develops collaborative relationships and partnerships with colleagues in the Writing Skills Improvement Program, Writing Center, University Learning Center, University Teaching Center, UITS, the University libraries, and other learning assistance programs to address students’ academic needs.
• Evaluates new approaches for the implementation of academic support and intervention for students at different pivotal points of the college experience.
• Utilizes the MASS student tracking database to document student contact hours and analyze student usage of the various program components (i.e., workshops, individual meetings, referrals).
• Assists in the development, coordination, and implementation of annual goals and objectives for African American Student Affairs and MASS.
• Apprises and advises the Director regarding issues, needs, and concerns of African and African American students.
• Maintains current and active involvement and communication with national, state and local organizations associated with learning assistance and academic support and issues impacting African and African American students.
• Prepares reports and proposals (including progress reports, annual reports, and statistical summaries) as required by the Director and/or MASS.
• Designs unit marketing and informational tools in coordination with AASA staff to promote and increase awareness of the unit’s goals, services and benefits.
• Represents African American Student Affairs and MASS at speaking engagements, information sessions, and other special programs.
• Represents African American Student Affairs and MASS on University committees, at campus functions, and various local, regional and national workshops and conferences.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required in higher education, counseling, educational leadership, psychology, or related field.
• Experience in program coordination, implementation, assessment and administrative experience, particularly in higher education academic retention programs.
• Demonstrated knowledge of African and African American culture, communities and issues concerning African and African American students and an understanding of national issues concerning said students.
• Demonstrated ability to plan and achieve short and long-term goals driven by the mission and goals of a department.
• Ability to effectively prioritize and successfully perform duties autonomously.
• Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated proficiency with data analysis and program assessment and evaluation.
• Demonstrated ability to work closely with multiple departments, organizations, and individuals in a complex environment.
• Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, Power Point) and Internet.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, educational leadership, psychology, or related field.
• Demonstrated record of leadership and participation in team-based administration and participatory management at a large public institution.
• Highly motivated and energetic professional who is a self-starter, excellent team player with a proven track record of success in administering programs at the collegiate level.
• Demonstrated knowledge of student retention theories most relevant to the position.
• Knowledge of challenges African American students face on a campus like the University of Arizona.
Salary Range:
$30,000-33,000 depending on experience
